Coalitions

The primary vehicle to build decent, affordable houses with low-income people in the Omaha area is the Adopt-a-House program. In 2004, sixteen new houses were adopted by coalitions of churches, community groups, and businesses. As Omaha Habitat for Humanity expands its capacity to partner with more families who wish to become homeowners, we seek to partner with more groups who will commit their time, talent and money to build houses with us. Habitat for Humanity provides the infrastructure and support for the project but the adopt-a-house sponsor does the body of the work.

Adopt-a-House Models:

  • Churches of all denominations join together in coalitions of approximately ten congregations. Congregations commit to raising money, providing leadership, and volunteers in the planning and building of a house. Meetings of congregational representatives are held six months prior to the build to form committees and carry out necessary tasks.

  • Corporations or business, either individually or in partnership with other companies sponsor the house financially and provide the work force to complete the building under the leadership of company associates. The corporation meets with the director to specify any variations on the general adopt-a-house agreement in order to facilitate its participation.

  • New or existing community groups also adopt houses. For example, service organizations may adopt a house or women may come together for the express purpose of building a house. Such groups begin working at least eight months in advance to create an organizational structure and solicit participation.
