How can my congregation get involved?
- Congregations may raise the funds and provide the labor to build a house. That is, a congregation may adopt a house individually or join with another congregation to raise the money and build a house together.
- Congregations may participate in Building on Faith Events during the week preceding the Day of Prayer. This is a week that Habitat dedicates to building with our church partners. Omaha Habitat has held community worship services, blitz builds and clergy build days during past Building on Faith Weeks.
- Congregations may make cash donations, offer in-kind goods and services, provide food for workers or support building projects in other ways.
- Congregations may send a group of volunteers out one time or on a regular (weekly, monthly) basis to help construct a home.
- Congregations can host speakers on housing issues—including representatives from Habitat—to raise awareness of the need for decent housing.
- Churches can sponsor an event, a mailing or fundraiser for Habitat.
- Congregations can host a volunteer group during our Collegiate Challenge (March) or during the summer.
- Congregations can support Habitat events by publicizing and attending Habitat events throughout the year.
- Churches and individuals can pray for those in need of decent shelter and for the ministry of Habitat for Humanity. Without the continuing prayers of millions of people, Habitat’s work could not continue. A special emphasis on prayer is made each year on the third weekend of September when people around the world observe the International Day of Prayer and Action for Human Habitat.
