Wells Fargo

Seven years ago, Wells Fargo team member Anita Johnson signed up to help with her first Habitat for Humanity build because she was looking for a volunteer opportunity. The experience made it much more than a personal volunteer opportunity.

"When I got there and saw the impact we were making in the life of a homeowner, it sparked something different in me," she said. "It was no longer volunteering. It was helping somebody in our community."

Johnson is one of the hundreds of Wells Fargo team members who have helped build Habitat for Humanity homes in the Omaha area as a result of the company's Team Member Volunteer Program. The program, sponsored by the Wells Fargo Housing Foundation, provides financial support when Wells Fargo team members volunteer to build or renovate a home for a low-income family. The financial awards are given to local nonprofit housing partners, such as Habitat for Humanity, and range up to $35,000.

In Omaha, Wells Fargo has donated $1.2 million to Habitat for Humanity and helped 73 families experience homeownership since 1999. The Omaha team also has donated countless hours to help support those building projects.

Richard Schenck, an Omaha-based community development manager for Wells Fargo, said the company and its team members take pride in providing affordable housing for low-income families.
Johnson, a store manager for Wells Fargo's downtown location, said the importance of what the team has accomplished especially strikes during the dedication ceremony that's held after each house is completed.

"You have these families going inside their new home, and there are three or four or five kids and they're used to staying in one room," she said. "They now have something of their own. To see those kids get emotional, it really has an impact. That's when I know I'm giving back, and it's making a difference in someone's life."
