Frequently Asked Questions
- How many applicants do you get?
In recent years, we typically give out 500 to 600 forms and receive about 160 completed applications. From that we select approximately 20 who best meet the criteria.
- How can you build quality houses using unskilled volunteers?
We have a professional construction manager and skilled supervisors on staff to maintain quality control. Many volunteers are experienced and lead those with less experience. It is a challenge to organize but it works!
- Are most of the materials donated?
Because we build so many houses, we must purchase most material. We do get many items at a discount and occasional inkind donations. Most materials must be paid for through donated funds.
- How do you get your land?
Many lots are donated and others are purchased at a modest price. We find infill lots east of 50th Street since many houses have been condemned and demolished. We prefer to acquire several lots in one area because it tends to rejuvenate the neighborhood.
- Does Omaha receive support and money from Habitat for Humanity International?
HFH of Omaha receives much support from HFHI in the form of technical assistance, training opportunities, and public relations. We receive no money from the national organization unless donors designate their gift for Omaha. Each affiliate is financially independent.
- Is Habitat for Humanity Omaha expected to support the national organization?
There are no dues to the HFHI headquarters; however we do support the Habitat building projects in other countries through a "tithe" program. Each time we complete a house in Omaha, we send $3,300 to another country. In many cases that amount will build a whole house. We allow the new family homeowner to select the country. It is a way to support the worldwide mission of Habitat for Humanity since every country tithes.
- How widespread is Habitat for Humanity?
Currently Habitat builds in more than 90 countries and all fifty states.
